Sex Hormones and Arrhythmia
Buber et al (Circulation 2011;123:2748, PMID 21632495) hypothesized that the hormonal changes associated with menopause may affect clinical risk in this population. The authors studied 282 LQT1 (n=151) and LQT2 (n=131) women enrolled in the Long-QT Syndrome Registry. (more…)

Looking ahead to National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September, the Heart Rhythm Society has created complimentary AF Awareness Resource Kits. The kits contain materials to increase patients’ knowledge about AF risk factors, symptoms, and available treatment options. The kits include the “A-Fib Feels Like” poster, CHADS2 Scorecard, Practical Rate & Rhythm Management of Atrial Fibrillation Pocket Guide, patient education brochures, and more.
Physicians and caregivers can complete and submit the online order form and visit the Society’s website for AF education opportunities and additional resources.
Let us know in the comment section below if there are other items that would help you discuss Afib with your patients.

The Heart Rhythm Society kicked off its national Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Campaign with a new public service announcement (PSA), “A-Fib Feels Like.”
Please help publicize this important message by including the PSA on the website where you work, on your own blog or your social media profiles.
In addition, if you have strong relationships with television and/or radio affiliates in your area, please contact Kennesha Baldwin, Manager of Media & Public Relations to learn how you can help bring attention to the PSA.
Finally, if you haven’t done so already, please view the PSA and tell us what you think!

The Heart Rhythm Society is dedicated to improving the care of people living with heart rhythm disorders. It does this by providing physicians and patients with the latest information, research, news and tools needed to advance the field of electrophysiology, by fostering better treatments and by improving doctor-patient communication. Our goal is to end suffering and death caused by heart rhythm disorders.
As part of this effort, the Society has launched a national Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Awareness Campaign. (more…)

My friends will tell you that I’m a technology junkie. They’re right. And, I’m really a sucker for a good app. So when Larry Stern, the Heart Rhythm Society’s Vice-President of Education, asked what I thought about the HRS Sketcher, an app that is available for heart rhythm specialists to use with patients, I was enthusiastic. A few months later when Larry asked if I’d be willing to test the new app that the Society had developed…. Let me just say that there was a cartwheel involved. (more…)

Autonomic Denervation with Magnetic Nanoparticles
Ganglionated plexi (GP) are important in the initiation of atrial fibrillation. Yu et al (Circulation 2010;122:2653, PMID: 21135360) reported a new method of autonomic denervation using nanoparticles. The authors synthesized superparamagnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) made of Fe3O4 (core), thermoresponsive polymeric hydrogel (shell), and neurotoxic agent (N-isopropylacrylamide monomer [NIPA-M]). Today, the ACCF/AHA/HRS issued an update to the atrial fibrillation (AF) guidelines with recommendations for the use of dabigatran, a recently approved agent by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is a direct thrombin inhibitor and indicated for the prevention of stroke in AF. At long last, the ACCF/AHA/HRS 2011 Focused Update on Management of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is available. In addition to this new guidance, I recommend that everyone review the 2006 Guidelines for the Management of Patients with AF and the European Society of Cardiology’s Guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation, as well. Editor’s Note: Dr. Peng-Sheng Chen, MD, Professor of Medicine at the The Krannert Institute of Cardiology, Indiana University, has agreed to serve as a blogger on EP Insights. In his posts, Dr. Chen will highlight and comment on new studies that affect the heart rhythm community.
Common variants in KCNN3 are associated with lone atrial fibrillation
Ellinor, et al (Nat Genet: 2010;42:240, PMID: 20173747) sought to identify common genetic variants underlying lone atrial fibrillation (AF). This condition affects a subset of individuals without overt heart disease and with an increased heritability of AF. (more…)
