Editor’s Note: Guest blogger Aman Chugh, MD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology, University of Michigan. In his post, he aims to educate the public about atrial fibrillation and its relation to stroke.
Although atrial fibrillation (AF) is usually not a life threatening arrhythmia, it may still result in significant morbidity. It is a major cause of stroke, accounting for approximately 20% of all strokes. (more…)

Structure and function of sodium channels
Many voltage-gated ion channel (VGIC) superfamily members contain six-transmembrane segments in which the first four form a voltage-sensing domain (VSD) and the last two form the pore domain (PD).
Studies of potassium channels from the VGIC superfamily together with identification of voltage-sensor only proteins have suggested that the VSD and the PD can fold independently. Whether such transmembrane modularity is common to other VGIC superfamily members has remained untested. (more…)

Looking ahead to National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September, the Heart Rhythm Society has created complimentary AF Awareness Resource Kits. The kits contain materials to increase patients’ knowledge about AF risk factors, symptoms, and available treatment options. The kits include the “A-Fib Feels Like” poster, CHADS2 Scorecard, Practical Rate & Rhythm Management of Atrial Fibrillation Pocket Guide, patient education brochures, and more.
Physicians and caregivers can complete and submit the online order form and visit the Society’s website for AF education opportunities and additional resources.
Let us know in the comment section below if there are other items that would help you discuss Afib with your patients.

Autonomic Denervation with Magnetic Nanoparticles
Ganglionated plexi (GP) are important in the initiation of atrial fibrillation. Yu et al (Circulation 2010;122:2653, PMID: 21135360) reported a new method of autonomic denervation using nanoparticles. The authors synthesized superparamagnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) made of Fe3O4 (core), thermoresponsive polymeric hydrogel (shell), and neurotoxic agent (N-isopropylacrylamide monomer [NIPA-M]).
