Editor’s Note: Guest blogger Aman Chugh, MD provides a summary of the RAAFT 2 trial results, which were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions in Boston.
Catheter ablation of symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is a class I indication in a patient who has not responded to or has not tolerated medical therapy with an antiarrhythmic medication. However, antiarrhythmic medications are limited by not only modest efficacy but also by significant adverse effects. (more…)

Yesterday I attended the Live Cases Session at Heart Rhythm 2012 in Boston. The group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, led by Dr. Gregory Michaud, performed catheter ablation of a patient with paroxysmal/persistent Atrial Fibrillation (AF). (more…)

The Heart Rhythm Society, in collaboration with other stakeholders, is educating Members of Congress, their staff and the public about heart rhythm disorders. During the American Heart Month, HRS is organizing a virtual fly-in on February 23. We ask HRS members and non-members to email their House Representatives and urge them to co-sponsor the AF Resolution (H. Res. 295). (more…)

Although atrial fibrillation (AF) is usually not a life threatening arrhythmia, it may still result in significant morbidity. It is a major cause of stroke, accounting for approximately 20% of all strokes. (more…)

Looking ahead to National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September, the Heart Rhythm Society has created complimentary AF Awareness Resource Kits. The kits contain materials to increase patients’ knowledge about AF risk factors, symptoms, and available treatment options. The kits include the “A-Fib Feels Like” poster, CHADS2 Scorecard, Practical Rate & Rhythm Management of Atrial Fibrillation Pocket Guide, patient education brochures, and more.
Physicians and caregivers can complete and submit the online order form and visit the Society’s website for AF education opportunities and additional resources.

It does this by providing physicians and patients with the latest information, research, news and tools needed to advance the field of electrophysiology, by fostering better treatments and by improving doctor-patient communication. My friends will tell you that I’m a technology junkie. They’re right. And, I’m really a sucker for a good app. So when Larry Stern, the Heart Rhythm Society’s Vice-President of Education, asked what I thought about the HRS Sketcher, an app that is available for heart rhythm specialists to use with patients, I was enthusiastic. A few months later when Larry asked if I’d be willing to test the new app that the Society had developed…. Let me just say that there was a cartwheel involved. (more…)
