The Heart Rhythm Society has joined with the American Medical Association (AMA) to help stop Medicare audits of dual chamber pacemakers.
The Society and the American College of Cardiology submitted a resolution to the AMA for review at its recent House of Delegates meeting. After the resolution was discussed, the AMA House broadened the proposal to benefit the entire house of medicine and passed the resolution. We were able to advocate for this issue and protect our members from unwarranted audits due to the support of Society members who also became members of AMA, which provided HRS with a seat in the AMA House of Delegate in 2009.

The simple ratio of presenter to audience is what makes a conference session such a unique experience. The people on stage have captivating expertise. They have the research and the ability to speak with authority. And yet, in an age of ubiquitous access and online networking, the audience must be engaged more than by the session content or the speaker’s tone and style. The audience must be asked to participate and to leverage their considerable numbers to lend an authenticity and relevance to the speaker’s words. It is this goal of audience participation that came to fruition at Heart Rhythm 2011. (more…)

Editor’s Note: Guest Blogger Matthew R. Ginks, MBBS, a clinical EP Fellow at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Trust, shares his experience attending Heart Rhythm 2011 sessions.
During Heart Rhythm 2011, there were two stand-out sessions for me on Friday coming from either end of the EP spectrum. Sadly neither of these was the session in which I was presenting!! It was a pleasure and a privilege to listen to (not see, as I was in the – albeit very wisely arranged – overflow room) Drs. Bradley Knight and Bill Stevenson go through diagnostic pacing manoeuvres (that is how we spell it across the pond in the Queen’s English) for supraventricular tachycardias (SVT). Theirs is a rare combination of abilities to identify and to teach some of the most clinically useful diagnostic manoeuvres in SVT diagnosis. A fellow audience member commented that it was the clearest explanation that he’d ever heard. (more…)
